Helicopters and public safety in Ecuador: air policing missions and risk management (2021–2025)
Abstract
The objective of this research was to analyze the role of police aviation in Ecuadorian citizen security, based on the operations of the Ecuadorian National Air Police Unit during the period 2021–2025. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, institutional statistical records were examined, revealing the evolution of the use of helicopters in patrol missions, air support for ground units, ECU-911 activations, rescue, medical evacuations, and the transfer of logistical resources. The results showed that the integration of the air component with the ECU-911 system has reduced response times and improved tactical coverage in emergency and public order situations. Finally, it was concluded that police aviation has been a strategic factor in citizen protection, inter-institutional management, and the operational efficiency of the State.
