Mathematical problem-solving strategies in demanding educational contexts: a systematic review
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify pedagogical strategies that foster mathematical problem solving in demanding educational contexts and to assess their transferability to an Alternative Basic Education Center (CEBA) serving a military population. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020, searching SciELO, ERIC and OpenAlex for articles published between 2020 and 2025 in journals indexed in SciELO, Scopus or Web of Science. Of 386 records, 345 were screened and 22 studies were included. The evidence favored problem-based learning, heuristic and metacognitive instruction, modeling, gamification, GeoGebra, digital modules and ethnomathematics, with more consistent effects when modeling, discussion of strategies, feedback and real-life problems were combined. It is concluded that these strategies can be transferred as design principles, although their effectiveness in a military CEBA requires local pilot studies.
