Self-instructional microlearning modules for adults in demanding contexts: a systematic review
Abstract
This study analyzed the effectiveness of self-instructional modules combined with microlearning for adults in high-demand educational and work contexts, and assessed their applicability to military students at an Alternative Basic Education Center (CEBA). A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 in PubMed, ERIC and OpenAlex, covering studies from 2015 to 2025 published in journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science or SciELO. Of 316 unique records, 36 studies were included. The evidence showed frequent improvements in knowledge, self-efficacy, motivation and satisfaction; two military studies supported the feasibility of brief, mobile and self-regulated access. Methodological heterogeneity, the predominance of short-term outcomes and the scarcity of studies in adult basic education limit generalization. The model is promising as a complement to teaching when it combines short sequences, practice, feedback, offline access and teacher support.
