Patient flow management in obstetrics. Case study in public hospital, Calceta, Ecuador
Abstract
The aim of the research is to analyze the flow of patients in the obstetrics service of the Aníbal González Álava Hospital in Calceta for the optimization of processes in maternal care. A mixed, descriptive and propositional approach was applied, through direct observation, surveys of staff and patients, and documentary review. The findings showed that there were weaknesses in the standardization of processes, communication between departments, and the digitization of patient medical records, which negatively impacted punctuality and overall care. There were also bottlenecks in the flow of patients, with waiting times exceeding the recommendations of international organizations. It was determined that the effectiveness of hospitals has to do with coordination between areas, technological support and administrative leadership, key factors to achieve modern patient-centered management.
